Uganda cohort

A cohort of 6 refugee teachers from Burundi, DRC, Rwanda and South Sudan comprise the GERE Peer Researcher team in Uganda. 

Abraham Aganze
Abraham Aganze is from the DRC, currently living in Nakivale refugee settlement in Uganda having left the DRC over 6 years ago. He is holder of a bachelor's degree in applied pedagogy, and has been a teacher for 10 years. He enjoys reading in his free time, and is excited to be a peer researcher with GERE because he has learned a lot through research and gained a lot of experience.
Ajak William Bul
Ajak William Bul is currently living in Kiryandongo Refugee Settlement, where he has been since 2014. He is South Sudanese by nationality. He completed Senior Four in 2022, and afterwards pursued several short courses with Whitaker Peace and Development Initiative, earning certificates in Trauma Healing, Sexual and Reproductive Health, Computer Skills, and Business and Entrepreneurship. Since October 2023, he has worked as a teaching assistant, supporting both lower and upper primary classes. In his free time, he enjoys playing football, reading novels, and working out. He is motivated to work as a peer researcher because it allows him to amplify the voices of fellow refugee teachers and contribute to meaningful change in his community.
Anitha Nduwimana
Anitha Nduwimana is a refugee and peer researcher residing in Nakivake settlement in Isingiro District, Western Uganda. Originally from Burundi, she arrived in Uganda in 2016, bringing with her three years of experience in teaching English. Anitha holds a Bachelor's degree in Educational Sciences with a specialisation in English. Currently, she volunteers as a French teacher for both Ordinary and Advanced Levels at Nakivake Secondary School. As an evangelist, she is passionate about preaching the Gospel and providing guidance and counseling to young refugees at the school. In her free time, Anitha enjoys reading books. Through her involvement in research, she aims to develop her skills and work effectively in humanitarian settings.
Clodina Akiteretse
Clodina Akiteretse lives in Nakivale refugee settlement, Isingiro District, where she has resided for 24 years. Born in Rwanda, she came to Uganda with her parents at a young age. She holds a diploma in Primary Education from Bishop Stuart University, and has 7 years of experience teaching mathematics to Primary Four students. In her free time, she enjoys music. She is excited to be a peer researcher because it allows her to understand community needs, drive positive change and empower fellow refugees through research.
Margaret Atto
Margaret Atto is from South Sudan, currently living in Kiryandongo refugee settlement where she has been for 30 years. She has received almost all of her education in Uganda, and is graduate-level trained as a secondary school teacher, with 15 years experience teaching O- and A-level. She loves playing netball in her free time. She is excited to be a GERE peer researcher because she feels she is in the right position to collect data from her peers due to sharing similar challenges and the amount of trust built between them.
Jean Bosco Nkengurutse
Jean Bosco Nkengurutse’s country of origin is Burundi, and he currently lives in Nakivale settlement, Uganda. He studied for a bachelor’s degree in History and Political Science for four years at the University of Burundi. Since 2015, he has been teaching at the lower primary school level. He enjoys reading books and watching TV, and is excited to be a peer researcher to learn something new, gain experience, understand the opinions and experiences of others and be updated on the topic.
